Thank you, thank you, Jim, Deena, Riley and Trey! How grand to read such a heartwarming letter from the Robinson family. Tim and I had
a terrific time at Granville Intermediate. And we're so grateful that
good folks like you came for the signing.
Ever, Pat

Mr. Bowers & Mr. Lewis,

We had a dog-gone-barking great time @ the book signing! We have read "First Dog "over and over! I know we definitely have found our new favorite book! We enjoyed learning about the different dogs and seeing the detailed pictures of where other dogs dwell! You both clearly have a talent that will be cherished in our family for always!

Riley wrote a poem:

First Dog made me smile
J. Patirick Lewis went that extra mile
Tim Bowers drew the paws,
That made us all in awe!

Trey says:

I am glad I met Bernie,
because she helps me Learnie!

P.S. Riley's kindergarten teacher read "First Dog" to her class and was sooo excited to have a signed copy for her classroom! Thank you both for entertaining the beginning readers with your incredible works of art!
Tim Bowers we love your illustrations and we will seek out more of your amazing work!
J. Patrick we adore your books and please extend a thank you to your oh so talented daughter!
With Sincere Thanks and Much Appreciation,
Jim, Deena, Riley & Trey Robinson
(friends of Bernie Donaldson, (the kid's SHE-ROE!)

Dear J. Patrick Lewis,
Is this book, First Dog, about the Obama's dog? The reason why i question that is because i think it is way to early to write about a dog in two weeks!

[...] An update on the newest White House resident, Bo the Portuguese Water Dog. Today Sleeping Bear Press released First Dog by J. Patrick Lewis and Beth Zappitello, illustrated by Tim Bowers, which stars a Portuguese Water Dog that travels the world looking for a home and, you guessed it, ends up on the steps of 1600 Pennsyvlania Avenue. How did the creative minds behind this book manage to choose the right breed of dog and publish the book the very week of Bo’s arrival? All I’m saying is that it involved a hair dryer. [...]

J. Patrick here to pick up that thread: Beth and I worked feverishly on our revisions, finishing them in about two to three weeks, to the satisfaction of our publisher and editor. Sleeping Bear Press knew that the time factor was cricital. Their decision to print the book in the U.S. rather than China saved weeks in the process. But in the end, it was all Tim, painting day and night, who got us on schedule. Hooray for the illustrator!
